Schwarzenegger launches Cobalt’s biobutanol pilot; rapid commercialization, green chemicals in focus

In California, as reported in yesterday’s Digest, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger officially launched the Cobalt Biofuels pilot plant in Mountain View…er, or was that Cobalt Technologies? The company has changed its name to reflect an increasing focus on green chemicals in addition to developing biobutanol as a biofuel.

“Cobalt’s development of biobutanol as a replacement for petroleum and petrochemicals meets the Low Carbon Fuel Standard challenge and is proof that California is the global dynamo for clean technology,” Gov. Schwarzenegger said in a ribbon cutting ceremony. “The rapid commercialization of technologies like Cobalt’s, assisted by focused state policies, will create thousands of cleantech manufacturing jobs in California, bring badly-needed economic development to hard-hit rural areas and ensure that we remain a high-powered engine for innovation and employment.”
