Dr. Contag’s newest entrepreneurial venture, Cobalt Biofuels, was founded in 2005. Cobalt Biofuels develops technology to enable the commercial success of biobutanol, the highly anticipated next-generation biofuel for the transportation industry.
Under Dr. Contag’s leadership, Cobalt Biofuel has developed industry-leading expertise in biomass conversion, continuous fermentation, and vapor compression distillation. The company is applying these technologies to increase the production efficiency, diversify the range of feedstock options, and simplify the supply chain delivery of next-generation of biofuels, specifically biobutanol.
Dr. Contag previously founded and served as president of Xenogen Corporation. Under her leadership, Xenogen received multiple R&D 100 awards, the “Top 25 Young Businesses” award, and the “Top 25 Women in Small Business” award from Fortune magazine. Xenogen Corporation went public in 2004. Dr. Contag is widely published in the field of non-invasive molecular and cellular imaging and is now focused on developing new technologies for the commercial success of biobutanol.
